Church Article by Missionary Tracy Martin:
“For God’s Sake, Do Not Neglect Discipleship”
When we arrived in Eastern Kenya, we were pleasantly suprised to see buildings with the name of Jesus Christ on them. Matatus with banners that read “King of kings”. It was evident that this part of Kenya had been evangelized. We visited boarding schools that had beautiful artistry painted on the walls; pictures of Jesus, Noah and the Ark, and Daniel and the lions. I was sure that the missionaries in Eastern Kenya had done their job and done it well. It seemed that Jesus was more popular in Kenya, Africa than in the United States of America.
We spent two weeks in Africa and my first impression was a good one but after talking with the Christians there, I was left with a great concern. While it was true that many knew “about” Jesus, I was concerned if many “knew” him or his word. It seemed that, at least in the region we were in, discipleship had been forgotten. In the villages of Eastern Kenya and Western Kenya, the knowledge of the Word of God was very limited. We learned through some of our conversations, that even some of the leadership had no sense between right and wrong according to biblical standards.
This left me with an ache in my heart and a desire to do something. I thought about the words of Jesus in Matthew 28:19 & 20 “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you; and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” There it was, in red and white!! We need to not just leave them after the decision to follow Christ is made but we need to “teach” them. I know that many of my African brothers and sisters love the Lord but they were not taught. There were many things they were calling “good” that were definitely “evil” and vice versa.
It made me wonder about the generation that is coming up behind them. Will they be taught? Will they be discipled? If all you know is little, all you will teach is little. God’s desire is not just to have converts but to have disciples. If they are not taught then they will be a weak part of a strong body. How sad is that? This is not only a need in Africa, this is a need in the United States of America. and all over the world. It is essential for proper development, just as good nutrition is essential for the proper development of a child. God wants a “strong” body all over the world. If we neglect discipleship this will not be accomplished in the mission of the Church. For God’s Sake, do not neglect discipleship!
