Missionary to India: Interview with Brother Kerry Mauldin

Kerry Mauldin was employed by Kmart for 20 years.  He worked as a Manager there until 1996, when the disease of Muscular dystrophy caused him to have to leave.  When most people would be devastated by this, Kerry found that sometimes life’s greatest challenges can bring the greatest opportunities.  This would bring him the door of opportunity to a whole new chapter in his life.  The door was opened for Missions and for the past 15 years he has been a missionary to remote villages in Andrah Pradesh, India.  Kerry is licensed with the Assemblies of God. He is the Founder of Mauldin Ministries. By the grace of God, his ministry has planted and built  254 churches, drilled many wells, and continues to help widows and  handicapped people with talents.  He bases the work of the talents on Matthew 25:15-29.  The talents that he helps them with are goats and water buffalo.  He teaches them to use what they have to double their talents.  After they double their talents they bring the First Fruit back and then give it to another widow or handicapped person. At times, Kerry is accompanied by a Doctor who travels with him to do some medical missions as well.  However, his main focus and call is to share the "HOPE" that we have in Christ. His greatest joy is touching the lives of people who have never heard the gospel of Jesus Christ and he said, "this is the motivation to keep going." Kerry resides in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He has four children: Anderea, 31; Rachel, 28; Holly, 23; and Andrew, 20.  His website is http://www.mauldinministries.com.  He has a personal facebook and his email address is kemauldin2@yahoo.com  .

What technology do you have available to you in India?

In the villages where we minister, we have Satellite Connection for a very low price.  We have to use thumb drives and we have instant internet access.

How do you use these in your ministry?
I send prayer requests to our partners and friends as we travel and we give updates of what is happening during our mission.  It makes them feel as if they are there with us,  as a part of the mission.

How big is Social Media in India?
In the cities, it is very big.  They have Internet Cafes, mobile devices, etc. However, in the villages that we minister in, the Social Media is very limited.

Have you seen it have a measurable impact on your ministry?  As far as the people you are able to reach?
Absolutely, as far as prayer needs are concerned.  The villages are very limited but I use Social Media for prayer requests and needs.  Those back in America can join with us in prayer which helps are mission in incredible ways.

Do you use Twitter or MySpace too, or just Facebook?
I use just Facebook.

Do you use Videos and how do you use them?
I do not use videos yet but I do use Power Point when I travel to Churches to show them what the ministry is doing in India.  It helps them feel apart and causes them to want to join with you in helping others.

When you have teams come, what kind of work do they do?
I have a Doctor travel with me at times and he does some medical missions, helps with glasses, etc.. but our main focus is on sharing the hope we have in Jesus Christ.

Are there any Christian radio or Television stations in India? If so, do you use them in your ministry?
There are some Christian programs in the Cities but not in the villages that we focus on.

Do you partner with any other Churches or Mission Organizations within India?
We have a indigenous board made up of native individuals.  Some are from Assembly of God Churches and the Church of South India (CSI). All churches are welcomed to join with us as well.

Word from a Missionary - Child Prostitution in India

The heart of God is breaking as he looks down on the Continent of Asia. Children are being sold into sex slavery as young as six years old. Parents are selling daughters and husbands are selling their young unwanted wives for as low as $200. Every year from 5,000 to 7,000 Napalese girls are trafficked into the red light districts in Indian cities. Most of these girls are between the ages of nine to ten years old. These young girls come from poverty stricken homes and that is the motivation that drives the parents to sell their daughter into sex slavery. Many of the girls are locked up for days, starved, beaten, and burned with cigarettes until they have learned to serve up twenty-five clients a day.

In one Indian Community in Madya Pradesh, twelve year old girls are forced into prostitution because of their families economic needs. In the Banchhara Tribe, some fathers organize ceremonies when their first born daughter turns twelve years old. During this ceremony the twelve year old girl makes it known that her intention is to work as a prostitute. These girls are taught by their parents that this is a part of their custom and their religious duty. After the ceremony, the father takes his little girl into a family room that is prepared for her to serve her first customer, who usually is a friend of the father. Most of the time, these men are three times the age of the child. Once these girls become a prostitute they are not allowed to marry or go to school. In her community, she is worshipped because she is supporting her family and fulfilling her destiny to carry out her religious obligation.

According to UN figures, 30,000 women and children are trafficked into Calcutta for Sex Trafficking and are forced into sexual slavery. These children are not lured into this but thrust into it. 21% of these girls are sold into slavery by relatives, 12% are sold into slavery by their own fathers. Some of these girls end up missing after their mother sends them to sale milk at the market place. Human traffickers steal them and sale them into sexual slavery. These young girls end up in another city and put in Hindustan Brothels. They have lost their innocence, their families, and their hope.

It seems that India is a land of missing children. Thousands are reported missing every year. There is also a market for “kid porn” in India. It is reported that while female child prostitution is most common, male children are also sold into prostitution as well. I guess one of the most horrific things that I have discovered in my research is Temple Prostitution. Dalit people are known in India as the lowest form of people. It has been said by Jon Lash, a Christian brother who visited India, that “the Dalit people are experiencing some of the most atrocious discrimination and subjugation in existence today!” (jonlash.com) They are oppressed and looked down on because of their social/economic status. One of the things that I find the most heart-breaking is the Temple Prostitution of the Dalit girls. Some girls are given to the temple in the name of their Hindu Religion. They are married to the god of the temple at a young age. This means they belong to the priests. Their duties are to take care of the temple during the day and to take care of the sexual desires of the priests at night. Most of them are considered “true bastards” because they have no father. Their mother’s are usually prostitutes who do not know who the father is. They have been stripped of all human dignity, dehumanized and have no way of escape because the Hindu scriptures say that “once you are married to god, your body is public property.”

The truth is, “there is a way of escape” and his name is Jesus. We must pray that God gives us a burden for this nation and these people. India needs Jesus, these women and girls need “hope” and it is only found in the message of Jesus Christ. We must be his hands extended, his voice for the oppressed. We are called to relieve the oppressed and comfort the broken-hearted. Imagine being a little girl, as young as nine years old, sold into sexual slavery by your own father. Thrust into a lifestyle of prostitution, living in a brothel in a strange city, surrounded by strange men and you have no family around you at all. No way of escape, no hope, no real love and your being abused and mistreated on a daily basis. God, give us a burden for India. Let us see the need and be moved with compassion.
