Media for Children’s Ministry

Social networks, computers, hand-held games, MP3 players, and smart phones—it is almost impossible to escape these things in our daily lives.   Technology is the norm for children who never experienced a time when you had to drive to the store and buy your music or play boring car games on long trips because there were no PSPs.  With all the “cool” stuff clamoring for their attention, can we really expect them to sit in children’s church and listen quietly for an hour as we tell them Bible stories?  Is there a way to make the lessons last when they walk out the door of the church?

Videos for Biblical Teaching

Children’s ministry is a big job, but thankfully, there are now numerous resources and time savers.  There are hundreds of websites chock full of creative, innovative ideas to help you make the most of the time you have each week.  Finding videos online that go along with your lessons can illustrate your points and cement the knowledge in children’s brains.  Most kids today are visual learners; videos will not only entertain them, but can help them understand the gospel in a fun and exciting way.

An even better idea is to allow children to create their own videos.  What better way to connect to a story than to act it out and tell it yourself?  As kids plan out their script, they will study scripture, build relationships with one another, and learn how to communicate the message of God.  Use media to create an unforgettable, entertaining experience for your students!

The Importance of Music

Music is a vital element to worship.  Kids love to sing and dance in praise to God.  If your church is large enough, you can provide a worship service entirely for kids complete with a band.  However, if you attend a smaller church, consider using worship videos or DVDs to give the children time to respond to God through music.

Online Resources

If you use curriculum from a large publishing house, it may contain a website that goes along with the material.  Children can visit the site and do activities and play games that will reinforce the time they spent at church.  Encourage parents to spend time with their kids playing these games and talking about what they are learning.

Children’s ministry is really ministry to families.  The goal is to equip families with the tools to draw closer to God and each other while giving kids a foundation for their faith.  Because of this, it is imperative to connect to the parents or guardians of the children to whom you are ministering.  Social networking is an incredible tool you can use to communicate with parents and build relationships.  Also consider using weekly emails and/or text messages to let parents know what is going on in the children’s department.

As you grow your ministry, open your mind to the creative power of the Holy Spirit.  God calls us to reach out the lost using the gifts He has given.  Media and technology offer unprecedented opportunities to win people to Christ.
